Message From Director
Dear River Friends,
We're back! We have much to share with you about all that's taken place the first half of this year, and what's in store this summer.
For starters, RGISC achieved a tremendous victory this month when the Laredo City Council passed a plastic bag ban that takes effect April 2015.
Earlier this spring, we carried out our first ever Eco Festival for Laredo, attracting a crowd of nearly 1,500 people, to learn how to live a more ecofriendly lifestyle.
We also organized our first ever Laredo BioBlitz, and had scientists here from Central and South Texas to document all living flora and fauna at the bend of the river downtown.
We also carried out an incredibly successful Laredo Birding Festival in February, attracting 114 registered birders, most of whom traveled from 16 other U.S. states and Canada. Not only that, we successfully campaigned to have San Antonio Water Systems withdraw its bid to build a pipeline that would export billions of gallons of water that feed into the Rio Grande.
We also held a townhall event earlier this year with residents from Rio Bravo and El Cenizo to get a status report on the situation involving 17 state violations at their water treatment plant.
Now, with RGISC turning 20 years old, we find ourselves busy preparing for our 20th Anniversary Gala in October. We hope to see all of you there!
Our "Beat the Heat" raffle is also attracting attention, as people have a chance to win a jawdropping 4kW solar panel system for home or business/ (installation included!)
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our 2014 growth and successes. We hope to see you on June 28.
